PSHE
Intent
At Old Hill Primary School, our PSHE curriculum develops pupils’ knowledge, skills and attitudes to lead healthy, safe and fulfilling lives.
The curriculum is designed to support pupils’ personal development, enabling them to become confident, resilient and respectful individuals. Pupils develop understanding of their emotions, relationships and responsibilities, preparing them to make positive contributions to their communities and wider society.
We ensure that pupils:
- Develop emotional literacy and resilience
- Understand how to keep themselves physically and mentally healthy
- Build and maintain positive relationships
- Show respect for diversity and inclusion
Implementation
PSHE is taught through a carefully structured curriculum supported by the Jigsaw PSHE programme. This provides a clear progression of knowledge and skills across the key areas of health and well-being, relationships and living in the wider world.
Lessons are designed to be inclusive, engaging and reflective. Pupils are given regular opportunities to discuss, reflect and apply their learning through:
- Discussion and questioning
- Role-play and scenario-based learning
- Mindfulness and reflection activities
- Collaborative tasks
PSHE is further developed through regular assemblies, which reinforce key themes and support whole-school understanding of important issues such as respect, well-being and staying safe.
Relationships education is taught in line with statutory requirements. At Old Hill Primary School, we teach relationships education but do not teach sex education.
Impact
Pupils at Old Hill Primary School:
- Understand how to stay safe and healthy
- Show respect for others and value diversity
- Manage their emotions with increasing confidence
- Build and maintain positive relationships
- Make informed choices about their behaviour and well-being
Pupils develop confidence in expressing their views and reflecting on their experiences. They understand their role within the school community and the wider world.
Assessment is ongoing and informs teaching. Teachers use discussion, observation and pupil reflection within lessons to identify understanding and respond to pupils’ needs.
By the end of Year 6, pupils leave Old Hill Primary School as confident, respectful and responsible individuals, prepared for the next stage of their education.
